Do You Have The Time To Commit?
The very first thing that you need to be thinking about is whether you actually have the time to commit to training. Half or full marathon training is going to be a very time intensive goal and if you’re running a busy schedule, it may not be the best goal to set.
Instead, a five or ten kilometer race may be a wiser move. While these will still give you good motivation, they won’t require nearly the same degree of training time as the half or full marathon would.
Are You Focused On Fat Loss?
Second, you also need to assess what your primary focus is right now. If you’re concerned with fat loss and that is your optimal goal, then the marathon training may not be the best of decisions. You shouldn’t be reducing your food intake during this training because if anything, your nutrient needs are going to increase dramatically.
Weight loss and long distance training aren’t exactly compatible, so you’ll need to determine which is your biggest goal and focus on it first and then shift to the next.
Do You Have Training Resources?
The next thing to think about is whether you have the training resources to complete your marathon training. Are you going to require a marathon coach? Or, will you need a treadmill at home to complete those long runs without having to spend time driving to the gym?
Make sure that you do have the resources you need in place as this will make the process that much easier.
Do You Have The Background?
Finally, also have a look at your background. Are you someone who has completed a running race before? Can you run for 30 minutes straight without a problem?
If you’re brand new to running and have never done a race before, a marathon may be a slightly lofty goal. Consider a shorter duration race instead and you’ll find you grow less frustrated with the process.
